Christmas is nothing

I wrote this in the early 90’s for my kids to sing at a Christmas program, and we’ve sung it at family gatherings ever since.

There is a municipal park near our home that has an annual drive-through holiday light display. I don’t want to sound snobbish, but driving through it last year it just seemed completely lame.

I hope you’ll forgive my bias as a committed Christian, but I often wonder, “What’s wrong with Jesus?” I understand those who deny his historicity. But what is to deny about the meaning of his story? The high becoming low, the innocent loving the guilty, the ruler as servant.

So I decided to produce this song and get it out there as a gentle reminder. It’s completely low budget–the entire orchestra is sampled instruments. My daughter Jaimie Hockema sang, with her older sister Dani Larson overdubbing the choir for the finale.

Please feel free to send a note and let me know what you think. Naturally I’d appreciate if you would share with others.
